YOON Ji Seon’s Rag face series is a sewing work that she sews on her portraits. As a process of her work, original images become changed, complicated and destroyed by repetitive sewing. Sewing destroys the fixed images on the photography. The dragging and tangling threads let us feel the joy of painting as they are mixed with the original image and objet. Painting is written “繪畫” in Chinese. The first letter of Chinese character of ‘painting (繪)’ is combination of ‘糸(thread)’ and ‘會(get together)’. This perfectly fits with her work. She’s accommodating freedom of having tangling, dragging, shapeless threads, having two different images of front and back in one action, and hanging in the air so you can enjoy both images or putting on the wall so you can enjoy one side of image. Starting her solo exhibition in 1999, she’s had total 12 solo exhibitions with various series of work that she used bones, hairs, pig skins, photography and threads as medium. Her 13th solo exhibition – Rag face is scheduled to be held in Yossi Milo Gallery, New York in October, 2015. She received a photography prize in 2013 from Ilwoo foundation. Upon this opportunity, she had a solo exhibition in Ilwoo space, 2014 and her art book was released by Hajte Cantz along with essays written by Young Min Moon and Sujin Shin. Yoon Ji Seon was born in Seoul, 1975. She lives and works in Daejeon at the moment.

그녀의 Rag face 시리즈는 자신의 얼굴 사진 위에 바느질하는 작업이다.
반복되는 재봉 질로 사진의 이미지가 변질되고 복잡해지고 파괴되는 것이 작업의 과정이다. 재봉 질로 사진의 고정된 환영을 파괴하면서 생긴 뒤엉키고 치렁치렁해진 실들은 사진의 이미지와 사진의 물성과 뒤엉켜 회화의 쾌를 느끼게 한다.
Painting을 한자어로 회화繪畫라 한다.
“회화繪畫”의 회繪는 실사糸에 모일 회會를 붙여 만든 글씨인데, 윤지선의 Rag face 작업은 글자를 그대로 실행한 작업이라 볼 수 있다. 실들의 엉킴과 치렁치렁함, 비정형적임, 한 번의 작업 행위로 앞뒤가 다른 두 개의 이미지를 얻을 수 있는 점, 공중에 설치해 두 이미지를 즐길 수도 있고 한 개를 선택해 벽에 걸 수도 있는 평면이자 입체인 자유로움을 적극적으로 수용하고 있다.
윤지선은 1999년 첫 번째 개인전을 시작으로 뼈, 머리털, 종이, 돼지 껍데기, 사진, 실 등 다양한 재료를 이용한 여러 시리즈의 작업으로 지금까지 총 12번의 개인전을 했다. Rag face 시리즈로2015년 10월 뉴욕의 요시 밀러 갤러리에서 13번째의 개인전이 예정되어 있다.
2013년 일우 재단상을 수상한 것을 계기로 2014년 일우재단에서의 개인전과 신수진, 문영민의 에세이와 함께 그녀의 작품집이Hatje Cantz에 의해 출판되었다. 윤지선은 1975년 서울에서 태어나 대전에서 작업 중이다.
